Is this just a sly marketing maneuver on the part of Sony in an attempt to tie their new Spider-Man to the year's highest-grossing film, or is there something more to this recent image of Andrew Garfield walking down the street with a slew of Thanos-related Avengers comics tucked under his arm? We've already reported that discussions between Marvel/Disney and Sony were underway to include The Amazing Spider-Man's Oscorp building as part of the New York skyline in The Avengers, so is it possible that the two studios are now trying to figure out a way to get Garfield into The Avengers sequel?

First off, why not? Sure there are a number of ridiculous legal wranglings, but that's why they pay lawyers millions of dollars. Figure it out. Make it happen. The Amazing Spider-Man isn't receiving the sort of terrific buzz it might need to successfully launch a new franchise, and so sticking Garfield in The Avengers sequel not only gives Sony a piece of what's sure to be a monster hit, but it also gives Garfield more fanboy street cred. Spider-Man producer Avi Arad even admitted recently that this sort of crossover can happen, saying, "Everything is possible. If something like that happens, it’s great for Disney, it’s great for Sony."
So here we are, back at the start. Why is he carrying multiple versions of the same Thanos comic? Is Thanos the villain in The Avengers 2? Has Garfield been cast in the Avengers sequel? Is this their way of unofficially announcing it? Is this just a marketing plot to get people buzzing about the possibility? Or is Garfield just messing with everyone? Lots of questions today, but not many answers. Hopefully someone asks Garfield what this is all about real soon ...
