'Spider-Man 2' May Star Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson; Electro Is the Rumored Villain

Oct 10, 2012

It was inevitable that this new Spider-Man franchise would eventually introduce Peter Parker's other main squeeze, Mary Jane Watson, but we didn't know exactly when that would happen. Well, now we do. Variety tells us that Mary Jane will very much be a part of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and that Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) is currently in talks to take on the role. Mary Jane isn't the only one either, as Harry Osborn (James Franco in the original trilogy) will also be introduced in the new movie. They'll join returning cast members Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone in the sequel, due out on May 2, 2014.

Woodley, of course, would take over a role played by Kristen Dunst in the three Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies. Anyone who knows even a little of their Spider-Man history realizes what the filmmakers are setting up here, and it should make for one helluva emotional rollercoaster of a sequel. Marc Webb has returned to direct, and the current rumors peg Electro as the villain.

Electro (aka Max Dillon) is a Spider-Man enemy who gains the ability to control electricity after being struck by lightning. Variety claims he may have been the shadowy figure featured in the post-credit sting at the end of The Amazing Spider-Man since lightning was prominently featured in the background.

As for Woodley, it's a good choice. She's got some great spunk, and because she's an up-and-coming actress with regard to feature work, there's a lot of room for her to surprise us with a version of Mary Jane we weren't expecting. The real challenge will come in crafting a character who's unique enough so she stands out next to Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy. Is this a more laid-back Mary Jane, or someone who's just as aggressive, independent and headstrong as Gwen? Plus, how will Harry Osborn factor into it all? Are they setting us up for one big, sloppy soap opera, or will Webb find a nice balance between action and love triangles?

Still lots more to figure out. In the meantime, check out Woodley in action below.
