So Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Alan Arkin Walk Into a Film ...

Feb 01, 2012

On paper it sounds like a fantastic trio for an action-comedy: Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Alan Arkin. They're all terrific actors who've had amazing careers featuring some great, memorable roles, and any film that stars the three of them has got to be something that's on your radar, right? Shooting this April, the three will star in Stand Up Guys (previously Old Timers), about "two aging criminals, one of whom has been hired to kill his friend," says THR. Adding, "They decide to enjoy one last night of debauchery in which they hit up a brothel, steal some cars and evade police but also face the choices they made in their lives."

All three have crossed paths before in different films, but only two at a time (Pacino and Arkin in Glengarry Glen Ross; Arkin and Walkin in America's Sweethearts), and you really want to root for this thing. It's true that 15 years ago this would've been a dream project, because today these guys are all hit and miss. Some roles feel inspired, while others feel like they're being churned out with very little effort just to score a paycheck and do someone a favor. Here's hoping Stand Up Guys (a title you kind of want to see feature these guys as aging comedians instead of criminals) is one of the good ones. Something worth watching more than once. Something that really turns people onto their earlier work.

No release date is set yet.

What do you think about this trio? Will it work?
