Small Screen Buzz: Kevin Costner's Western, 'The Purge' TV, Plus: The Trailer For 'The Gifted,' a New X-Men Show

May 15, 2017

When the movies spill over to the small screen, we've got you covered. Here's the latest on new series based on X-Men and The Purge and an exciting new show starring Kevin Costner:

Kevin Costner Stars in Yellowstone

If there's going to be a new Western TV series, it's best to have Kevin Costner (pictured above in Hatfield & McCoys) involved. According to Deadline, the actor will star in and serve as executive producer on Yellowstone, the new show from Sicario and Hell or High Water screenwriter Taylor Sheridan set for the new Paramount Network (which replaces Spike). Coming in summer 2018, the 10-part series will see Costner as a rancher defending his land from the encroachment of land developers, an Indian reservation and the government's national park agency.

The Purge Isn't Set During the Purge

Here's a surprise for fans of the Purge horror movie franchise: the series won't take place on that one fictional night of the year where murder and other crimes are legal. Instead, as revealed today by NBCUniversal (via Deadline), the plot will follow what goes on the rest of the 364 days, in the wake of the last Purge and in anticipation of the next. This is a very interesting way to fill in that world that permits such a disturbing "holiday." The Purge series will debut on USA and SyFy next year along with the latest Purge movie.

The Gifted Trailer

Following the success of FX's relatively grown-up X-Men-based series Legion, the franchise is going younger with its next small screen effort. The Gifted, which is part of Fox's fall schedule, looks like more of a teen-centric show based on its new trailer, below. Specifically focused on a family (parented by Stephen Moyer and Amy Acker) who go into hiding when son and daughter turn out to be mutants, the Bryan Singer-produced ongoing series also features known Marvel characters such as Thunderbird and Polaris.
