Most red band trailers are enticing because they can get away with showing more content - sex, violence, language and the like - than their green band counterparts. Well, the red band trailer for Sinister, a new horror movie starring Ethan Hawke as a writer who finds some unsettling inspiration for his new book, certainly shows a whole lot more content-- but we're not sure that's actually a good thing.
When Sinister first played to a public audience at the SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, it was a total wild card. Nobody knew what they were in for. I happened to be in that audience, so I can attest that every creaking floorboard and every precisely lit shadow turned the entire theater into scared babies (including our official reviewer). So, it's a little disappointing to see that the latest trailer gives away some of the more effective moments of the movie. It doesn't give them all away, mind you, but you will certainly be best served going into this movie as blind as possible.
Having said that, potential softening of scares aside, this is an interesting trailer. It's not particularly hardcore as far as red band trailers go, but it's very cool that there's not a single line of dialogue in it. The only thing you hear is a sample of the film's truly creepy score atop plenty of messed-up imagery. Sure, we think that imagery will work best if you're seeing it for the first time when it hits theaters on October 12 (or next week at one of the advanced screenings), but if you don't want to take our word that this is the scariest movie of 2012, then do press play below.
