'Silent House' Trailer: Elizabeth Olsen and the 'Open Water' Directors Present a Horror Film All in One Take

Elizabeth Olsen in Silent House

It’s probably not a good sign when the big “buzz” surrounding your new horror film is that it was shot all in one take. Granted, we love extended takes more than the average person (we’re movie geeks, after all), but at the end of the day it’s mostly a gimmick. Shooting a film in one continuous take is awesome and requires a lot of planning and flawless execution for sure, but it still shouldn’t be more important than things like the story.

Unfortunately for Kris Kentis and Laura Lau’s Silent House, the single-take film style has trumped everything else – and we don’t expect this new trailer to change that.

The film, which our own Jenni Miller says “looks and feels more artsy than your typical midnight fare, but its hollow characters and unraveling plot quickly undermine a promising premise,” now has an official trailer. As far as horror film trailers go, it’s rather underwhelming.

While the new trend in previews is to give everything away, this Silent House clip falls back to the old standby – showing us nothing, or things with no real sense of context. It’s full of shots of Elizabeth Olsen being menaced, running around, and breathing heavily and packs in a jump scare or two, but it doesn’t do anything to convince us we need to see this film. Sure, the opening narration and whirring camera noise are a nice homage to Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre – but it’s all sort of downhill from there.

Will the full flick somehow be better than this trailer? We’ll find out for ourselves when Silent House hits theaters on March 9th
