Just when you thought it was safe to go outside during a thunderstorm, Sharknado is back!
That’s right, there’s a category five storm headed toward NYC – and it’s not some wimpy polar vortex. Nope, Sharknado 2: The Second One is working its way toward the Big Apple, promising high winds, heavy rains and tons of shark fatalities.
Syfy and the Asylum are prepping to shoot the upcoming sequel to one of last year’s weirdest cultural touchstones, and they’ve just announced that stars Ian Ziering and Tara Reid will be reprising their roles in the new installment due later this year.
With filming set to get underway in New York next month, Syfy and the Asylum are already firing up the hype machine. Can a sequel recapture American audiences? Only time will tell. Thomas Vitale, executive VP of movies at Syfy, certainly thinks the odds are in the sharks’ favor.
“Sharknado was an extraordinary 'perfect storm' which captured the attention of movie fans across the globe. You couldn't go anywhere without hearing about Sharknado! By reassembling the creative team - and dropping sharks onto New York's iconic sites - we're unleashing yet another 'fin' wave of shark-mania."
Asylum COO Paul Bales takes a slightly more philosophical approach, adding:
“We're thrilled to be able to bring back the talent that made Sharknado a hit. Can lightning strike twice? I don't know, but it's a scientific fact that you're more likely to be killed by lightning than by a shark. This film will have lightning and sharks, so that's got to count for something."
Indeed it does…
Are you up for more flying shark action? Expect Sharknado 2 to chomp its way into your living room this July.
