If actors and actresses could have sequels, then Shailene Woodley would be the sequel to Jennifer Lawrence. The Descendants star is quickly following in the footsteps of Lawrence, who used her awards-buzzy role in Winter's Bone to snatch up parts in X-Men: First Class and The Hunger Games, firmly cementing her as one of Hollywood's most popular up-and-coming stars. Now Woodley is using her awards-buzzy role in The Descendants to do the same exact thing.
Not only has she now booked the part of Mary Jane Watson in the Spider-Man sequel, but according to THR she's also close to starring in the Divergent adaptation, which we just recently gave you the 411 on as possibly becoming the next Hunger Games. Divergent is set in a future society divided into factions based on traits, and Woodley will play the lead in the film, 16-year-old Beatrice Prior, who leaves her faction to join a rival one where she falls in love. The film is currently set to hit theaters on March 21, 2014.
Meanwhile, THR also tells us that Woodley is able to swing both roles because her turn as Mary Jane in the Spider-Man sequel is a tiny one, as it's meant to set up a larger, more integral role in the third film. As expected, they confirm that the "studio seeks to build to the classic 'Death of Gwen Stacy' story." Expect Woodley to have a very busy couple of months, as The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is due out only two months after Divergent, on May 2, 2014.
