“Nobody f***s with the Jesus,” but Big Lebowski star John Turturro, who played the bowling ball-slurping bad boy on the lanes, is attempting to f**k with the character by filming a spin-off all about the extremely quotable Jesus.
Directors Joel and Ethan Coen, who seem to have no interest in the project, have mentioned Turturro’s idea before: “John Turturro, who wants it, talks to us incessantly about doing a sequel about his (bowler) character Jesus. He even has the story worked out, which he’s pitched to us a few times, but I can’t really remember it... No, I don’t see it in our future.”
While at the Taormina Film Festival this past weekend, Turturro confirmed that if all goes his way, he’d be shooting the Jesus spin-off next year. “If I can get the permission I need, I'd like to return to that role," he said. The most we know is that a title, 100 Minutes of Jesus, was being bandied about some time ago. Make of that what you will. Is Jesus’ life ripe enough for another interpretation? And how will Turturro handle that pesky pedophilia thread about his character? Is the fleeting magic of a Coen character like Jesus best left alone? For more Jesus, check out this interview with Turturro, in which he reveals that he had no idea what The Big Lebowski was about the first time he saw it.
