See What Big Upcoming Movies Are Premiering at the Toronto Film Festival

Jul 22, 2014

The Toronto International Film Festival unveiled the first wave of its lineup this morning. Noah Baumbach, Mike Leigh, David Gordon Green, Jason Reitman, Bennett Miller, David Cronenberg, Antoine Fuqua, Edward Zwick, Mikael Roskam and David Dobkin are just a few of the directors we’re anticipating work from. An opening film hasn’t been announced yet, so we still have something to look forward to, but Alan Rickman’s second directorial effort, A Little Chaos, starring Kate Winslet as a female architect in the court of King Louis XIV, will close the festival.

The tragic story of Olympic wrestling champion Mark Schultz, Foxcatcher, which saw tons of buzz at Cannes, is part of the Gala repertoire, but we’re still wondering if there’s a place at Tiff for other Cannes favorites — like Xavier Dolan’s Mommy, which took home the Prix du Jury.

Benedict Cumberbatch’s Alan Turing biopic The Imitation Game will also make an appearance. Reese Witherspoon is having a comeback year of sorts with two films at the fest: Jean-Marc Vallée's Wild and Philippe Falardeau's The Good Lie. Jason Reitman’s Men, Women & Children, chronicling how the Internet has affected a group of teens and their parents, also makes a stop at TIFF. Then there’s Nightcrawler, with Jake Gyllenhaal, which just released a bizarre teaser and will mark the directorial debut of screenwriter Dan Gilroy. The Tom Hardy-starring The Drop, about an underworld network of Brooklyn bars run by gangsters, has us similarly intrigued. David Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars, featuring another quietly creepy turn from Mia Wasikowska, about our celebrity-obsessed culture, is also highly anticipated in the Gala lineup after a great run at Cannes.

The 39th Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 4 to 14.
