See How 'World of Warcraft' Pays Tribute to Robin Williams in Newest Expansion

Sep 09, 2014

Robin Williams World of WarcraftThe late comedian Robin Williams loved video games. He named his only daughter after the princess in Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda games. He loved Half-Life. He was a serious World of Warcraft player. Williams often described himself as a “hard-core gamer” who would spend his downtime on set shooting aliens, or exploring faraway magical lands. So, it’s only fitting that one of his favorite pastimes has chosen to immortalize him in digital format.

Blizzard, the creators of the wildly popular Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game World of Warcraft, has revealed a few of their tributes to Williams in the upcoming Warlords of Draenor expansion pack. Some, like the photo to the left, are obvious – others require a little more thought.

The most obvious homage is the genie in the lamp. Rubbing the item spawns a blue genie inspired by Williams’ portrayal in Disney’s Aladdin. When the genie appears, he tells players about the perks and drawbacks of having infinite cosmic power while being forced to live in a space that makes the average studio apartment look like a McMansion.

Players who keep poking around will eventually find a cracked egg that’s an homage to Mork & Mindy, plus some toys scattered about in reference to the film with the same name.

You can see the genie in action in the video clip below. Knowing Blizzard, I’m guessing this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Williams’ tributes hidden in the game. The developers love pop culture, and I fully suspect players will uncover more nods to the work of the legendary comedian as they poke around the game world when Warlords of Draenor releases on November 13.
