Watch the First 'Creed II' Trailer: Here's Everything We Know So Far

Creed II

Update: The first trailer for Creed II has arrived, and fans of the 2015 original should feel right back in the groove as Sylvester Stallone's Rocky Balboa helps guide Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Johnson to another challenging bout in the ring. This one is far more personal than the last.

Fans of the 1985 sequel Rocky IV  will also feel added excitement with the late reveal of Adonis's latest opponent. He's fighting Viktor Drago, son of the Soviet boxer Ivan Drago, who killed his father. It's interesting that this first trailer doesn't go heavy on an explicit explanation of this callback plot point. Fans of this franchise are trusted with the subtle nod.

The film will open in theaters on November 21, 2018. Check out the poster, featuring Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Johnson, in its full glory below. Below that, check out everything else we know about the film in our previously-published post.

Creed II

A lot has happened since the release of Creed in 2015. One of its actors was nominated for an Oscar (and won a Golden Globe) for his performance in the movie. All three of its main stars (as well as its director) have joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Philadelphia Eagles won their first Super Bowl. And now production has begun on a sequel to the Rocky franchise spin-off.

To kick things off with the Creed II shoot, Sylvester Stallone posted a video to Instagram commencing the start while on location in the City of Brotherly Love:

Who is back from the last movie?

Michael B. Jordan, fresh off Black Panther and Tessa Thompson, fresh off Thor: Ragnarok, will reunite as light heavyweight contender Adonis Creed and singer-songwriter Bianca, respectively. Stallone is also back playing the iconic Rocky Balboa for the eight time, while Phylicia Rashad, Andre Ward and Wood Harris are all back as their characters from Creed as well.

Who is back from the original Rocky franchise?

Dolph Lundgren, last seen playing Soviet boxer Ivan Drago in 1985's Rocky IV, will reprise the villainous role, a fan favorite.

Who is new this time around?

Florian Munteanu, a Romanian boxer in real life who goes by the nickname "Big Nasty," will portray Ivan Drago's son, Vitor. Also, Russell Hornsby just joined the cast as a character named Buddy Marcelle.

What is the plot of this one?

Adonis, whose father Apollo was killed by Ivan Drago in Rocky IV (watch below), will now go up against the younger Russian.

Here is the official synopsis:

Life has become a balancing act for Adonis Creed. Between personal obligations and training for his next big fight, he is up against the challenge of his life. Facing an opponent with ties to his family’s past only intensifies his impending battle in the ring. Rocky Balboa is there by his side through it all and, together, Rocky and Adonis will confront their shared legacy, question what’s worth fighting for, and discover that nothing’s more important than family. Creed II is about going back to basics to rediscover what made you a champion in the first place, and remembering that, no matter where you go, you can’t escape your history.

Is there a different writer and director for the sequel?

Yes, while Coogler is serving as an executive producer on Creed II, the movie will be helmed by his old film school classmate, rising talent Steven Caple Jr. (The Land) from a script by Luke Cage writer Cheo Hodari Coker.

In a press release announcing the production start, Coogler said of the changing of the guard:

“When I wrote and directed Creed, I wanted to tell a human story about a family from a new perspective, while also paying homage to the Rocky characters we’ve all grown up knowing and loving. I’ve known Steven was an amazing filmmaker since our days at USC film school together, so I can’t wait to see what he, Sly, Mike and Tessa bring to this next chapter.”

Caple added:

"It’s an honor to be a part of the franchise and work with such a thoughtful team. I got involved because I’ve always been a Rocky fan and I enjoy stories with heart and substance. But when Ryan put his touch on Creed I felt another level of connection to the franchise. It started to feel personal for many different reasons. This next Creed is a tale beyond the boxing ring and dives deep into family, legacy, and fears. I’m excited to share my view and collaborate with the talented cast and crew."

When does Creed II hit theaters?

The sequel will open later this year, on November 23.
