See the Final 'X-Men: Apocalypse' Trailer, Plus New Images Featuring Angel vs. Blob and More

X-Men: Apocalypse

As the conclusion of a trilogy, the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse must meet expectations that were initially raised by Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class. Vaughn's reboot of the X-Men series was almost universally acclaimed for its breezy wit and snappy action, while Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days of Future Past dug deeper into the mythology of the mutant heroes and villains.

Of course, Singer guided X-Men and X2: X-Men United to great success some years ago and now he finally has the opportunity to bring a new part of the story to a grand conclusion. The first two trailers brought back some familiar characters and introduced new mutants, most notably the so-called "first mutant," played by Oscar Isaac. They also set the extremely dark and appropriately threatening tone for X-Men: Apocalypse.

And yeah, we noticed this part too...

Over the weekend, director Bryan Singer also posted a new photo from the movie, captioned in part: "Mutant Martial Arts. Light as a feather." The mutant Angel (Ben Hardy) can be clearly seen in the background, but who's that in the foreground?

Singer didn't say, but it could very well be the Blob, a mutant with superhuman strength and durability who commonly sided with the villains against the heroic X-Men in Marvel's comic book series. Up until now, the character has not been mentioned in connection with X-Men: Apocalypse and it seems likely that it's a cameo appearance for the Blob. But we'll have to wait and see the movie to find out if the Blob plays a bigger role.

Other new promotional images released by Fox (via Coming Soon) showcase a variety of characters. First comes Psylocke (Olivia Munn), who serves as one of Apocalype's so-called "four horsemen."

Magneto (Michael Fassbender) is another mutant controlled by Apocalypse, though we wonder how long that will last.

Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) gets choked by the evil Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) in this image; again we wonder how long he'll be able to keep her within his mighty hand.

X-Men: Apocalypse will smash into theaters on May 27.
