See Emma Stone and Steve Carrell as Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs In 'Battle of the Sexes'

One of the things audiences look for in a biopic and other movies based on a true story is authenticity. They want to see actors transformed into the famous people they're playing. Sometimes they also favor exact replicas of actual photographs and film and TV scenes. Fox Searchlight aims for full interest with its first look, via The Hollywood Reporter, at the upcoming drama Battle of the Sexes.

The movie, set in 1973, stars Emma Stone and Steve Carell as tennis legends Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. The two faced off in a monumental, highly watched match, and the above picture is from a scene where they announce the event in a press conference. The well-documented appearance of King, who was ranked second for women players at the time, and the then-retired Riggs, can be seen for real below.

Obviously, Stone's hair isn't quite right, and we could probably even nitpick about Carell's shaggy 'do, but otherwise it's a decent copy. As for whether the rest of the movie beyond a still image does the trick, we have to wait until next year to find out. Battle of the Sexes, which is properly being directed by a woman and a man (the Little Miss Sunshine duo of Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton), only recently began filming.

While we wait for it, here's some AP footage of the actual "Battle of the Sexes" event:
