Variety is reporting that Jaume Collet-Serra (House of Wax, Orphan and Unknown) has been hired to take over the recently abandoned director's chair on Akira. Frankly, I really hope this is the last bit of Akira news I write for a while. I'm not gunning for the project - a live-action adaptation of the very popular Japanese manga/anime of the same name - or anything, it's just that given Warner Bros.' track record when it comes to this particular film, I want the studio to either finally get it off the ground or call it a wash and walk away.
The budget is reportedly now at $90 million, which is actually a fairly modest figure considering we're talking about a futuristic story in which a biker gang saves the world from an out of control medical experiment. The script has bounced around from screenwriter to screenwriter for a while now, but it looks as though the draft Collet-Serra will be working from was penned by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows scribe Steve Kloves.
And in completely unreleated and very brief news, the first image of Colin Farrell in the Len Wiseman-directed Total Recall has found it's way online (via /Film). It doesn't reveal too much, but it's all we've got for now.
