Rumor Patrol: Is Sam Jackson's Mace Windu Getting His Own 'Star Wars' Movie?

Mace Windu

Could Mace Windu, one of the baddest mother-lovin’ Jedis in the Star Wars universe, be getting his own stand-alone film? Maybe... at least according to director A.J. Edwards.

Edwards, who’s the filmmaker behind the young Abe Lincoln feature The Better Angels, recently did a Reddit AMA event. During the course of the Q&A, the subject of recent rumors suggesting the director was in talks with Disney about helming one of the stand-alone Star Wars spin-off films was broached. This is when things got interesting…

It all started off in a pretty standard way with Edwards responding “Talking about it, not able to say a lot yet." Hey, at least we know it’s a possibility, right?

Edwards wasn’t done there, though – adding... "it will focus on Mace Windu."

Holy moly – if that’s not saying a lot, we don’t know what is.

If Edwards gets the gig, he’d join other young, up-and-coming directors like Josh Trank and Gareth Edwards in making a series of stand-alone films based on popular characters in the Star Wars universe. Until now, the most popularly rumored characters to be getting their own movies were Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Han Solo and Boba Fett. Mace Windu would be every bit as interesting as those guys, particularly because he's a character from the prequels and especially if they keep Samuel L. Jackson in the lead role.

So what's the real deal?

Of course, this could be Edwards just messing around to create some rumors on a slow news day. It does seem unlikely that he’d really blurt out he was in talks to make a movie about Mace Windu immediately after saying he couldn’t really talk about the rumor in any depth. Also, Disney doesn't seem to be embracing the prequels as much as the original trilogy, so we don't think this one is too likely. Because of that, we’re keeping this one firmly planted in the rumor file until we hear more.

What do you guys think? Would you be down to watch Sam Jackson as the centerpiece of his very own Star Wars film, or are you hoping they go with some of these other options instead?
