Rumor Patrol: 'Knight Rider,' Light or Dark?

Rumor Patrol: 'Knight Rider,' Light or Dark?

Aug 22, 2017

Given the weight of nostalgia these days, it's surprising there hasn't already been a big budget Knight Rider movie. There have been attempts going back at least 15 years, though, and there was a short-lived TV series reboot almost a decade ago. Now The Weinstein Co. is gearing up to finally hit the big screen with Michael Knight and his talking car, KITT, and there are two proposals for how it should happen. Check out both ideas below and let us know which you prefer.

Light

According to Screen Rant, TWC wants to do a Knight Rider movie with a comedic tone, similar to 21 Jump Street. This tone is evident in their rumored interest in having John Cena star as the crime-fighting hero made famous by David Hasselhoff in the 1982 series and subsequent TV movies, and casting Kevin Hart as the voice of KITT. That would give us a muscular action hero type behind the wheel and a loud, funny AI under the hood.

The pros here are that 21 Jump Street worked well and was a hit at the box office, spawning one sequel and possibly more in the future. It's not quite as star-studded in person as the Chris Pratt/Danny McBride version teased a few years ago, but it definitely could have potential. The con is that another Hasselhoff series was just similarly turned into an R-rated comedy, and that movie, Baywatch, was a huge box office flop. There was also CHiPs earlier this year, and that cop show adaptation failed, too.

Dark

Although much less likely, this idea is worthy of notice. Hasselhoff himself wants to reprise his role for a movie or TV show, and he told Cinema Blend that he recently pitched it to filmmaker Robert Rodriguez. Here's his idea:

I have met Robert Rodriguez. He does [From] Dusk til Dawn and Machete. And I said 'You need to do Knight Rider.' Because he was doing a marathon of Knight Riders and he said 'Can we have a selfie!?' And I said, 'No, I don't want a selfie! I want to do the movie! I want to shoot the TV series! I want to bring it back and make it dark! Michael Knight comes back and he's pissed.' ... I hope it happens, and if it does, it'll be kind of like Logan. It will be dark. Hasselhoff as Michael Knight in 2017. Knight Rider. The saga continues.

The pros here are that Hasselhoff is still the man. He proved as much with his cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, for which he also performs a new song on the soundtrack (with a very cool retro music video), and his invisible presence in Atomic Blonde. Even with the light tone, he could be preferred, since he's having fun with his own image, also as seen recently in the unrated cut of Ted 2. The con is that the failed 2008 series reboot was also a continuation, though that focused on his character's son. Also, could we take Hasselhoff seriously enough for something Logan-esque?
