'Ruby Sparks' Trailer: 'Little Miss Sunshine' Directors Return with 'Weird Science' Meets 'Stranger Than Fiction'

Apr 19, 2012

It's been six years since co-directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris stormed the indie film scene with their awards-darling Little Miss Sunshine, and now they're finally back with another corny-cute tale about an aspiring author who creates the girl of his dreams as a character in his latest book only to watch her magically come to life right before his eyes.

One glance at this first trailer for Ruby Sparks ignites the vibes of films like Stranger Than Fiction or Weird Science, but it also shows off the same sort of eccentric chaotic beauty these two nailed in Little Miss Sunshine. The trailer just pops with feelings, and while Paul Dano may tend to overact a bit, there aren't many young male actors who show the short of emotional range he's capable of. Here, Dano plays the author, while up-and-comer Zoe Kazan (who also wrote the screenplay) plays his fictional character-turned-real.

Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think. Is this the next Little Miss Sunshine? Ruby Sparks hits theater on July 25th, so guess we'll see then.  [via Apple, where you can watch the trailer in HD.]
