Her biggest roles have been in action and adventure blockbusters, but Avatar and Star Trek actress Zoe Saldana is set to headline a horror-themed television project. She’ll be the star of NBC’s new four-hour miniseries Rosemary’s Baby, adapted from Ira Levin’s 1967 novel. The Satanic story about a pregnant woman became a feature film in 1968, directed by Roman Polanski.

Agnieszka Holland (Europa, Europa) is directing the small-screen version, which takes place in Paris. Saldana’s Rosemary and her husband move to the “City of Light” where they settle into an apartment with a dark history. After Rosemary finds out she's pregnant, increasing suspicions about hubby and the neighbors, who seem to have wicked plans for the unborn child, overwhelm her.

This is a casting move we didn’t see coming, but a welcome surprise. Mia Farrow played a naive, pixieish Rosemary in Polanski's adaptation. Her wide-eyed innocence and panicked desperation were palpable. Saldana is older and more of an assured presence than Farrow’s waifish take on the character. She also has more career experience under her belt than Farrow did when she played the part. When Farrow took on the film, her biggest role up to that point was on the television series Peyton Place. “Zoe has proven that she is one of our most gifted actresses, and we think she has the perfect combination of spirit and gravitas to take on the title role from Ira Levin’s infamous novel,” NBC said in a statement. Do you agree?

The Coen brothers’ 1996 cult favorite Fargo is coming to television. Yahoo had the first photos from the Minnesota-set story about an inept group of criminals and the police chief who tracks them down. The 10-episode series will debut new characters and a new misdeed at the center of it all. Looking at these pics, we can almost hear the Midwestern accents. Martin Freeman and Molly Solverson play characters who are loosely based on William H. Macy’s and Frances McDormand’s in the film, and so far we totally approve. Fargo arrives to your TV this spring on FX.

And speaking of FX, Yahoo also has the first images from the network's adaptation of The Strain, about a team of scientists fighting a virus that turns people into vampires. The book was cowritten by Guillermo del Toro, who will be executive producing the show as well as directing the pilot.
