Ron Howard Set to Direct Robert Downey Jr. in 'Pinocchio'

Ron Howard / Robert Downey Jr.

It's been more than 15 years since filmmaker Ron Howard made a movie that was specifically targeted at a family audience, namely, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. He won two Academy Awards right after that for the terrific drama A Beautiful Mind and since then has concentrated on fare that's more appealing to somewhat older audiences, like The Dilemma, Rush and In the Heart of the Sea.

Howard is now sailing back toward a family-friendly adventure. He is attached to direct a new live-action Pinocchio, according to Tracking Board. As you might expect, it's based on The Adventure of Pinocchio, a classic 19th century book by Carlo Collodi about a wooden puppet that comes to life. Robert Downey Jr. will star as Geppetto, the puppet's creator, and is also serving as a producer on the project along with his wife Susan Downey.

The most famous big-screen adaptation of the book was probably Disney's 1940 animated version, though multiple live-action versions have been made over the years. Various writers have toiled away at a new interpretation for this project, including Jane Goldman (Kingsmen: The Secret Service, X-Men: First Class), Bryan Fuller (TV's Hannibal) and Michael Mitnick (The Giver).

Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, Inherent Vice) was hired to write a new draft of the script in July 2015, with an eye toward possibly directing, but he departed in November. We don't know whether he completed his version of the script, though it's likely Howard will want another writer on board so the movie will reflect his vision for the movie.

Ron Howard is certainly more than capable of making Pinocchio into a fun fantasy that will appeal to audiences worldwide, especially with Downey on board as Geppetto. Howard is currently finishing up Inferno, once again starring Tom Hanks as Dan Brown hero Robert Langdon and due for wide release in theaters on October 14.
