Just the fact that Robert Redford has his own Marvel movie character poster is enough to entertain the lot of us in numerous ways, but there's some other stuff going on in this poster that fans should be really excited about.
Do you see it? Here's Redford's Alexander Pierce, a senior leader within S.H.I.E.L.D., standing in a room with Washington D.C. to his back. We see the Washington Monument and the Capitol building -- two of our nation's most recognizable landmarks -- and soaring above them are multiple flying ships. Not just one, but three massive ships, with what looks like another off in the distance.
What this poster does is begin to reveal a very different landscape post-Avengers. We didn't feel it as much in Thor: The Dark World because much of the action took place outside Earth, but now that we're back in the United States, we get a taste of just how different it is following that attack on New York City at the end of The Avengers. S.H.I.E.L.D. is no longer operating in the shadows -- it's literally hovering over Washington D.C., forecasting a future that's going to be very complicated and certainly dangerous.
Redford's standing there and it's as if he's asking us, "Are you ready for this? For all of this? For flying spaceships and superheroes, and all that comes along with it?" We already know that Captain America: The Winter Soldier will lead directly into The Avengers: Age of Ultron, and even though it's just a random character poster, we love how Marvel is slowly teasing and evolving its big-screen universe in ways that consistently up the ante for its characters while giving audiences something fresh and unique each time out.
