If years of watching horror movies has taught us anything, it’s that you never take the word “final” literally. Studios and filmmakers have often insisted that various movies or events were the “last” in a series – e.g. Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter – only to return to the well again when they realize there’s more money to be made.
Freddy Krueger is all too familiar with this maxim. Freddy had his own “final” chapter back in 1991 with Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare – except that it wasn’t. Krueger came back for several more appearances, with fan-favorite Robert Englund donning the iconic bladed glove.
However, it’s been over a decade since Englund last got into full Freddy regalia – way back in 2003’s Freddy vs. Jason (he wasn’t cast as Krueger in the recent remake),leading many to suspect that one of our most beloved horror actors was officially done with the role that made him a household name. This appears to be true, but if you’re longing for one more visit from the bastard son of a thousand maniacs, you’ll want to snag some tickets to the Chicago Horror Convention’s Flashback Weekend.
Englund will appear at the event on Friday, August 8 in full Freddy makeup to celebrate the original Nightmare on Elm Street’s 30-year anniversary. KNB FX artist Robert Kurtzman will be making sure our favorite dream-stalking madman looks as nightmarish as he did three decades earlier.
The con is billing this as “the last time” Englund will don the full makeup, and as such are charging an exorbitant amount of money for the privilege of attending and getting a photo op with the actor. $375 gets you in the door, a picture with Freddy, and a collectable lanyard. If this really is the last time Englund gets into character, the price might be worth it – however, like so many of those slasher movies of the ‘80s, we suspect that there might be an encore appearance. Best-case scenario? We actually get a new Nightmare on Elm Street movie with Englund back in the red-and-green sweater.
