Ridley Scott Reveals How 'Alien' and 'Prometheus' are Linked

Feb 27, 2012

Ridley ScottWhen Ridley Scott’s Prometheus first blipped onto sci-fi fans’ radar, it was promoted as a prequel to the director’s much-loved Alien. Things changed over the course of the film’s production – to the point where Prometheus went from being a part of the Alien canon to an entirely different standalone science-fiction feature with ties to the Alien universe. Scott and company have been very secretive about what connects Prometheus to Alien, but the filmmaker appears to have finally spilled the beans.

While being interviewed by a Hungarian news outlet, Scott revealed the details surrounding who actor Guy Pearce will be playing in the upcoming film. If you’re averse to spoilers, you’ll probably want to skip past the next two paragraphs.

Scott told the interviewer “when the first Alien movie and Blade Runner were made, I thought that in the near future the world will be owned by large companies. This is why we have the Tyrell Corporation in Blade Runner, and Weyland-Yutani in Alien. They sent the Nostromo spaceship.

The Prometheus is owned by an entrepreneur called Peter Weyland, and is played by Guy Pearce. That’s the connection between the two films, and nothing more. Prometheus is a new film, a new world, and is full of new ideas. And of course new monsters as well."

That’s it? All this time we’ve been hearing about these connections to Alien and the big revelation is that Guy Pearce will play the boss of one of the companies who sent the Nostromo out into space? We’re kinda hoping something got lost in translation here…

We’re cool with the fact that Prometheus isn’t an Alien prequel. Our inner geeks made peace with that ages ago. We love the Prometheus trailer (watch it below) and can’t wait to see the film – but if this is the big reveal of how the two films are linked after months of teasing, it’s pretty underwhelming. Pearce as Weyland feels more like an easter egg than anything – a sly wink and nudge to hardcore fans, not a big tie-in between two (apparently) different universes.

While these words came directly from Ridley Scott himself, we’re still taking them with a grain of salt. After all, the Space Jockey who turned up in Alien is also featured in Prometheus, so we’re not entirely convinced that an appearance from Peter Weyland is the only thing that will bring these two films together. It's clear that we won’t be seeing any Xenomorphs running amok in Prometheus, but we’ll all have to wait until the film’s June 8th release date to figure out all of the ways the two films connect.
