Rick Moranis Teases the 'Spaceballs' and 'Ghostbusters' Sequels That Haven't Happened... Yet

Jun 25, 2013

Rick Moranis hasn't appeared in a film since the late 1990s, but we keep hoping to see the quirky actor back on the big screen. The Ghostbusters star just released a new album, which we told you about in May. He's been raising a family as a single father and appearing in the occasional interview — like the one in Heeb Magazine, which has us wondering about Moranis' future in film. It turns out that Moranis almost made a new Spaceballs movie, and he was approached about a new Ghostbusters. There may be more Moranis in our future if the Ghostbusters crew can ever sort things out. The actor told Heeb:

"I got a call three or four years ago from an associate of Aykroyd’s. Some sort of producer. And he said, 'Listen, I gotta ask you something, because the Internet says you’re retired' — which is one of my favorites, by the way… I just love when the Internet is wrong. It’s the only thing that will save journalism. So he says, 'I gotta ask, would you do it?' I said, 'I don’t say no to anything until everything is presented to me.' What is it? Is it happening? Is there a script? What’s the part? Who else is in it? Where is it? How long is it gonna take? You know, I need a little bit more information."

In an interview with Empire, Moranis reiterated the story, adding:

"I haven't talked to Danny (Aykroyd) about it. Somebody he's associated with called me and I said, 'I wouldn't not do it, but it's got to be good.' You know, I'm not interested in doing anything I've already done, and I thought the second one was a disappointment. But I guess I'm interested in where that guy is now. I sort of see him as being Bernie Madoff's cellmate in jail. Both of them being so orderly that they race to get up and make their beds."

This is good news, since a new Ghostbusters movie wouldn't be the same without Moranis' geek icon, Louis Tully.

As far as Spaceballs, Moranis is very particular about classifying the film as a "cult video hit." He told Heeb about his hilarious pitch for a sequel to the sci-fi parody movie: "My idea for it was Spaceballs III: The Search for Spaceballs II. And I was unable to make a deal with Mel. I couldn’t make a deal."

The world needs more Rick Moranis. Let's make it happen people!
