One of the most memorable scenes in Return of the Jedi is when Luke Skywalker arrives at Jabba the Hutt’s palace with the idea that he’s going to rescue Han Solo and Princess Leia. Things don’t quite go as planned for the young Jedi, and he soon finds himself in a dank dungeon taking on an intimidating Rancor for Jabba’s amusement.
The Rancor in the film is a monstrous beast that Industrial Light and Magic created through stop-motion animation, but before that came to be the original plan was to shoot a person in a life-sized Rancor costume. Yep, that’s it down below.
Dennis Muren of ILM made the decision to go with the stop-motion miniature when he concluded that the costumed actor looked too Muppet-like for the scene. Judging from the photo, he made the right call – because this Rancor is more adorable than terrifying. But how sweet would it be to have that costume and bust it out every October for Halloween?
