Trailer/Poster/Controversy: Kevin Smith's 'Red State' Continues to Piss People Off

Jul 27, 2011

It's not so much the movie that's bothering people as it is the man behind it, but once again Kevin Smith has found a way to churn up some controversy as it relates to his latest film, Red State. Truth be told, I enjoyed Red State when it premiered at Sundance (read my review here) back in January. Separating the film from its extremely vocal and controversial creator, it's a freaky little thriller that, on occasion, gets bogged down by Smith's wordy (but entertaining) dialogue. Nevertheless, there are some truly spine-tingling moments in this thing, and when we're trapped inside a religious hell with our main characters, the film really soars. Definitely recommend seeing it.

That said, I don't know if it's worthy of an Oscar nod, which is one of the reasons folks are all up in arms today. That, plus the fact that Smith is charging $20 a ticket to check out the film's Oscar-qualifying run in LA at the New Beverly Cinema (buy tickets here), where it will screen from August 19-25. The twenty bucks does get you a Q&A with Smith (and probably some of the cast) after each screening, but New Beverly faithful are complaining about the price since most screenings there are only $7 ... and are double features ... with filmmaker Q&As.

So why is this movie more expensive? Well, it may have to do with Smith renting out the theater himself for the run (and having to cover those costs), as well as the fact that it's a new release. Others are chalking it up to Smith being greedy, which may or may not be a valid complaint. Either way, folks don't have to pay it if they don't want to. Red State will be available to everyone on VOD come this September.

What do you think? Would you pay $20 to see Red State with a Kevin Smith Q&A? Too much, or totally worth the price of admission?
