This Is Pretty Awesome: Panasonic Has Created a Real-Life 'Aliens' Power Loader

Alien Power Loader

Even if you’re not the world’s biggest Aliens fan, I think you’re going to find this next story awesome.

One of the most unforgettable moments in James Cameron’s sequel comes at the climax and involves Sigourney Weaver taking on a huge Xenomorph queen with the help of a robotic power loader. For years, geeks have wanted one of these mechanized body suits – and now, thanks to the fine folks at Panasonic, that dream is one giant step closer to reality.

The company has revealed its latest creation in this nearly three-minute-long news story. Look at that thing and tell me the design team didn’t grow up watching Aliens and used Cameron's suit as basis for their work. It’s practically identical.

Scientists have created the Power Loader as an exo-suit that can be worn by a human operator and be used to move heavy objects with minimal effort. Other uses may or may not include a fight to the death with giant alien queens, if that’s your thing. Seeing it in action is very cool, although we have no idea when these things will be developed enough to use in the real world. Looks like they’re pretty close here – so if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to head out to ask about a loan so I can park one of these bad boys in my garage the day they’re officially released. Alien storyboards reveal the film’s most infamous scene

There are no shortage of great scenes and stunning visuals in Ridley Scott’s Alien, but the one everyone remembers is the gruesome chestburster sequence where the incubated Xenomorph is officially born into the world.

The FX in that scene are still amazing to this day – and the storyboards demonstrate that Scott’s filmed take doesn’t deviate from the preshoot concept art at all.

Check it out and compare for yourself – just do it before you eat your lunch. [via Geek Tyrant]
