'Raiders of the Lost Ark' Turns 35: Celebrate With This Look at the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made

Jun 10, 2016

Raiders of the Lost Ark turns 35 this summer. In fact, it was released nearly 35 years ago to this very day. And what better way to celebrate it than by taking a look at movie that is the ultimate celebration of it? Confused? We'll explain.

Raiders!: The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made is a documentary about a group of kids who spent their childhood painstakingly recreating Steven Spielberg's movie shot-for-shot. Why? Because they loved the movie and they loved filmmaking, so they figured why not make their own version of it? And while the idea of watching a documentary about someone else's home videos may sound a bit odd, trust us, the movie - and their story - is fantastic.

It's not simply about kids making a fan film. It's about how people's relationships to pop culture can conquer their lives. It's about how movies effect us in ways we don't even realize. And it's about how much fun you can have, and how many meaningful memories you can create, if you allow yourself to be passionate about something, even if the manifestation of that passion is as seemingly dorky as dressing up as Indiana Jones and filming in your mom's basement.

So in honor of Raiders of the Lost Ark turning 35, it is our honor to share these side-by-side comparison pictures of the fan film version versus the real thing. Check 'em out.

And also check out our chat with Eric Zala and Chris Strompolos, the now-grown-up kids who started it all.

And lastly, check out the actual trailer for Raiders!: The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made., in theaters and On Demand June 17, 2016. Check Drafthouse Films for a theater listing.
