It's rare that a movie releases a deleted scene before the filmmakers even release the movie it was deleted from, but then again The Raid 2 isn't exactly your average kind of movie. And so here we are, two days away from the film's American release (it starts rolling out on March 28, 2014), with a look at an entire action scene that you won't actually see in theaters.
What's even crazier is that, despite the extreme violence on display in this clip, it wasn't left out of the action epic (read our review from Sundance) so the film could earn an R rating. The only reason it's on the cutting-room floor is because director Gareth Evans felt it hurt the pacing of the film (a good call, since it's already 150 minutes without this five-minute scene). That's right, The Raid 2 had so many action scenes they've got leftovers that never even made it into the film.
Here's what Evans had to say about the scene:
This was probably the hardest for me to cut due to the fact that the production on this scene lasted around six days of shooting, it cost us a f**k load to make and it served to escalate the gang war out onto the streets involving people outside of the closed off intergang politics.
At the end of the day though, after discussing its worth it took us away from the central theme for a little too long with characters that would only exist in this scene alone.
Warning: The below clip is very violent, so do not press play with children or touchy coworkers present.
