Gareth Huw Evans took the action world by storm with The Raid – a bone-crunching martial arts film featuring Iko Uwais fighting his way through a building inhabited solely by the worst criminals in Jakarta. Since the movie’s release, Evans has been hard at work with Uwais crafting a sequel – and our friends at Twitch have scored the first official teaser trailer for the hotly anticipated follow-up.
The new clip opens up with star Uwais punching the hell out of a prison wall (reminds us of that Donald Pleasance line about Michael Myers’ time at Smith’s Grove – “I- I- I watched him for 15 years, sitting in a room, staring at a wall, not seeing the wall, looking past the wall -- looking at this night, inhumanly patient, waiting for some secret, silent alarm to trigger him off." We can only hope the follow-up sentiment – a line about death having arrived in the town of Haddonfield -- applies here too). The trailer then shows us various scenes with other characters from the first film.
What’s immediately clear is that The Raid 2: Berendal is upping the stakes and moving beyond the confines of a single location. As far as teasers go, it’s pretty much perfect – the action builds to crescendo in a mere 80 seconds and the whole thing has left us desperate to see the finished feature.
Can the sequel live up to the lineage of the beloved original? If this teaser is any indication, then the answer is yes. We’ll find out for sure sometime in 2014. Until then, enjoy the clip – and be sure to play it loud for maximum effect.
