MGM and 'Raging Bull 2' Producers Settle Lawsuit Without Trading Legal Blows

Aug 02, 2012

Raging Bull De NiroMGM has settled their lawsuit against former boxer Jake LaMotta and the producers of the upcoming Raging Bull 2. THR reports both sides reached an amicable agreement that has eliminated the need for further court hearings. The system works!

If you’re not up to speed on the whole case, it basically involves MGM suing LaMotta and a team of producers who were hard at work on Raging Bull 2 – a sequel chronicling events in the boxer’s life. The problem was that LaMotta (now 90) sold the rights to his entire life story to MGM back in 1976. Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro then teamed up to make the classic Raging Bull using those tales for the basis of their film.

MGM felt a Raging Bull 2 movie not only violated their contract with LaMotta, but that the name would dupe audiences into thinking this new film was a legitimate sequel to Scorsese’s title.

Under the terms of the agreement, Raging Bull 2 will live on and eventually be released. The title has now officially been changed to The Bronx Bull – based on LaMotta’s nickname. The sequel's producers also agreed to release a press statement to the public disassociating their project from the original Raging Bull. They lived up to their word.

“The parties have amicably reached a resolution of their pending litigation, pursuant to which production of a film based upon certain events in the life of Jake LaMotta will proceed under the working title The Bronx Bull. That film is not related in any way to the 1980 motion picture entitled Raging Bull, and MGM is not associated with the film in any respect. Neither party will have any further statements regarding this matter.”

With those stipulations met, MGM has filed to drop the suit and everyone gets a happy ending… just like in the movies.
