Quick Hits: Scorsese and DiCaprio to Remake 'The Gambler,' 'Flatliners' Remake, Robert Zemeckis' Next and More

Aug 26, 2011

Busy Friday night ...

-- Martin Scorsese has reunited with his Departed screenwriter William Monahan on a remake of the 1974 film The Gambler, starring James Caan as a literature professor with a nasty gambling problem who slowly spirals out of control. Leonardo DiCaprio will also join his Departed team as the star, with Marty returning to his comfortable New York setting. [THR]

-- Speaking of remakes, Ben Ripley (Source Code) has been hired to write the script for a Flatliners remake, based on the 1990 Joel Schumacher film about a group of students who experiment with death and revival. The film starred a number of young actors on the rise at the time, including Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, and William Baldwin. It would be great if the remake could retain a similar great ensemble cast of talented up-and-comers. [Deadline]

-- Robert Zemeckis has been dancing between a number of films as he tries to sort out his next move, which looks to have finally been sorted. He'll be directing Denzel Washington in Flight, about a commercial pilot (Washington) who helps navigate a successful landing when his plane malfunctions, and is hailed a hero before it's revealed the pilot was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time. [Deadline]

-- On the heels of her new action film Colombiana debuting in theaters, Zoe Saldana has signed up to produce and star in Dominion, in which she'll play a half-human, half-angel. No further plot details were revealed, except that it's a supernatural thriller. [THR]

-- Finally, here's a video mashup that puts Han Solo in the driver's seat for the Drive trailer. [Slashfilm]
