'Smashed' Director to Adapt Postapocalyptic Young Adult Novel 'Pure'

Jan 18, 2013

Joining the ranks of postapocalyptic, romantic, dark tales aimed at younger audiences (read: trying to fill the void that the recently completed Twilight saga has left) is an upcoming adaptation of Julianna Baggott's Pure. The popular YA novel will be written and directed by indie filmmaker James Ponsoldt (Smashed, The Spectacular Now).

Like Hunger Games, Pure's dystopian future centers on the struggles of two opposing societies: the Pures, who live a good life untouched by the trauma of change, and the Wretches, who haven't been so lucky after the "Detonations" (the end of society as it was). The cover of Baggott's novel shows a butterfly trapped in a bell jar, which is exactly how the Pures exist. It's known as the "Dome" and protects the superior group. There's also a love story at the heart of the novel, which you probably could have guessed.

Pure is part of a planned trilogy, which means it's a built in franchise if audiences take to the tale. Publisher's Weekly called it a "fascinating mix of stark, oppressive authoritarianism and grotesque anarchy... Baggott mixes brutality, occasional wry humor, and strong dialogue into an exemplar of the subgenre." This is a fairly new title (released September 2012), so readers are still discovering Pure, but the story has all the makings of another Hollywood hit. You can watch a book trailer for Pure, below.
