This week's must-see DVD/BD, and why we're lovin' it.
What? The Losers
Who? Directed by Sylvain White and starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoë Saldana, Chris Evans, Idris Elba, Columbus Short, Oscar Jaenada and Jason Patric
Why? Right about now the thermometer is rising and you might be craving a noisy popcorn action flick in the comfort of your cool living room that drowns out the sound of your rattling air conditioner. Enter The Losers, which is basically The A-Team with a hot babe (Zoë Saldana) thrown into the mix for a little spice. The titular "Losers" are Clay, Jensen, Roque, Pooch and Cougar—an elite Special Forces unit sent into a Bolivian jungle on a search-and-destroy mission. They soon find out they have been set up by a mysterious enemy known only as Max (Jason Patric) and the team is presumed dead. The five are very much alive, however, and team up with Aisha (Saldana)—a lethal lady with possibly cruel intentions—for a multi-city chase that culminates in an exciting confrontation with Max at the Port of Los Angeles.
The Losers is mindless entertainment with some spirited (and better than usual, for this kind of fare) performances by the five team members, a deliciously evil turn from Patric, and plenty of rat-a-tat-tat PG-13 action (i.e. plenty of gunfire but very little blood). This is what summer movies are about for many of us, although two of the most talked-about films in theaters this summer—Inception and Toy Story 3—are about as cerebral and sentimental as our sun-baked little heads can take. If you're looking for a red-meat alternative, you can't lose with The Losers.
What Else? Both the DVD and Blu-ray contains a featurette devoted solely to the discussion of Aisha and how Saldana held her own with the testosterone-heavy cast; "Band of Buddies: Ops Training," which talks about how Special Forces people do their jobs and covers the shooting in Puerto Rico; and a deleted scene, which is more of an alternate/extended ending.
