James Gunn Calls 'Planet Hulk' Rumors "Complete Bulls**t"

Jul 21, 2014

Recently a big rumor hit the Web about how the ending of Avengers: Age of Ultron would set up a a connection to Guardians of the Galaxy, fueling a previous rumor that Marvel would be adapting the beloved comic storyline Planet Hulk into a movie. That would in turn make Guardians of the Galaxy 2 a crossover movie with Hulk that integrated key elements from that comic line about Hulk journeying to an alien planet.

You'll notice that before we did not include a potential spoiler warning before that. That's because it's all complete bulls**t and isn't happening.

James Gunn has finally started doing press for Guardians, and he took the first opportunity he could to completely debunk those rumors. And not in a coy, "maybe we will, maybe we won't" kind of way. This isn't the cast and crew of Star Trek Into Darkness dancing around admitting Khan is in the movie. There is no misinterpreting his answer when The Playlist brings up those rumors:

"I can answer that question very easily: it is absolute, 100% bulls**t. It feels like a great relief to finally say this after all the dumb stuff on the Internet. There's not going to be a Planet Hulk movie, there was never going to be a Planet Hulk movie, there was never a plan for the Hulk to team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy – I wouldn't want the Hulk to team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy! And it's all a bunch of complete bulls**t."

Well, that's pretty unequivocal, we'd say. Gunn does go on to clarify one point about something in Guardians that does lend some credence to those rumors, but the answer is pretty much a boring legal one. And since we'd rather not take away an Easter egg for some fan to speculate over, we won't include it here, but head to the Playlist if you'd like that explanation.

As for the actual truth around Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Gunn's contract does give him the option to direct it should he want to. Or, more precisely, Gunn's contract states that he will be directing "another Marvel film," which one website is already speculating (with some rather intriguing evidence and reaction so far, at least) means the director is already the studio's choice to direct The Avengers 3.

But what say you, Marvel fans? Are you bummed there are no plans for a Planet Hulk movie?
