Bad News of the Day: There Will Be No New Pixar Movie in 2014

Sep 18, 2013

We've become so used to expecting an annual movie from Pixar that to go an entire year without one just feels... wrong. Wrong, we say! The L.A. Times tells us today that Pixar's The Good Dinosaur, originally slated to hit theaters on May 30, 2014, will now arrive in theaters on November 25, 2015, primarily due to the departure of the film's director, Bob Peterson. Other Pixar vets like John Lasseter and Lee Unkrich have now taken over the project -- about a world in which dinosaurs coexist with humans -- until it finds a new leader, forcing the animation powerhouse owned by Disney to sit this one out for the first time since 2005.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel, though, and it comes with the news that Pixar will instead release two movies in 2015, with the unique Inside Out (set inside the mind of a little girl with her emotions being the main characters) arriving on June 19, 2015, then The Good Dinosaur that November 25. Because of these changes, Disney has now pushed back its Finding Nemo sequel Finding Dory to June 17, 2016. Other release date changes include Disney's Maleficent 3D moving from July 2 to May 30, 2014.

It'll definitely feel strange not to have a summer Pixar movie to look forward to, but if it means that extra time will be spent making The Good Dinosaur a better movie, then how can you really complain? With all the huffing and puffing going on over Pixar's desire to make more sequels and prequels for their most beloved properties, it'll be exciting to get two completely original Pixar movies in one year. That, friends, has got to be worth the wait.

Meanwhile, we envision other studios smiling and toasting this news today as it now means they don't have to compete with a Pixar movie for that 2014 Best Animated Oscar.
