Loosely inspired by the life of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as the charismatic leader of a religious movement in the 1950s, with Amy Adams as his wife and Joaquin Phoenix as a troubled war veteran. The film has stirred up a fair bit of controversy already, which prompted us to reflect on the most provocative and/or controversial religiously themed films from the past few decades.
