Judgment Dave: You Know What Movies Deserve Oscar Nominations? Other Ones.

Jan 22, 2013 Comments

Here are the films nominated for Best Picture: Amour, Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, Zero Dark Thirty.

Nine. Could have had 10. But only nine got enough first-place votes to earn the nomination.

And all of them are fine choices. Okay, that’s not true. They’re really not all fine choices. A couple of them are seriously problematic or wildly wrong, but you can go read my reviews to figure out which ones I mean. If I ran the universe Amour would win but I don’t and it won’t. That film will have to settle for being just like Stanley Kubrick, a guy who was handed a career total of zero Academy Awards.

Anyway, this isn’t about boo-hooing over what got snubbed. That would mean that not being snubbed is important. Instead, this is about how the Oscars don’t actually matter, how they are, for most people who care about film, just another excuse to have a Super Bowl-style party and order in wings and look at haute couture, about how in spite of conventional dull wisdom, awards aren’t the last word on what’s worthy of praise.

Here, then, alphabetically, are 10 other films of 2012 equally deserving of all the accolades (and in some cases, even more) those nine up above are getting.
