As director Spike Lee is happy to point out, Oldboy is a new version of the Japanese manga by Garon Tsuchiya, not a remake of Park Chan-wook's stinging, Korean-language thriller. Still, whenever Hollywood has endeavored to remake -- or reimagine, or reboot -- Asian movies, the results have often been disappointing. There are a few exceptions, however.
