Not every film that makes an impact on popular culture makes that impact during its theatrical release. Some must first suffer the bitterness of failure before tasting the sweetness of public validation. Thanks to home video, a flop can turn into a hit so thoroughly that no one remembers it any other way.
When the Wachowski siblings' and Tom Tykwer's ambitious Cloud Atlas came out last year, it failed to do much at the box office. But perhaps a second life on home video lies in its future. Its overall quality and underlying weirdness makes it a great candidate to join the ranks of these other home video success stories.
