'Beautiful Creatures' 101: Your Guide to the Next Big Teen Fantasy Series

As you’ve noticed there are a lot of YA books getting turned into movies lately and very few of them have the widespread recognition of, say, The Hunger Games trilogy or Harry Potter. Thus most people assume all of these adaptations have something to do with pretty young people, vampires and battles to the death, or maybe some mixture of each.

Yes, a lot of them have to do with supernatural elements, but there’s quite a bit of interesting storytelling going on too. For example, this week’s Beautiful Creatures, written by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, is the first book in the Caster Chronicles series, which is a gothic saga of magic and romance in contemporary but fictional Gatlin, South Carolina. It’s been adapted by director Richard LaGravenese and stars major caliber talent including Viola Davis, Jeremy Irons, Emma Thompson and Emmy Rossum.
