Peter Jackson to Direct 'Tintin' Sequel in 2013 for a 2015 Release Date

Dec 12, 2012

From the beginning, the plan for a proposed The Adventures of Tintin trilogy was to have Steven Spielberg direct the first film and Peter Jackson direct the second. It may have seemed like the second film was in doubt after The Secret of the Unicorn failed to do a ton at the U.S. box office, but it more than made up for it overseas, where the character is considerably more popular. So the second film was never really in jeopardy of getting the greenlight, the question was just when would Jackson find the time to make it?

With a third Hobbit film added to the top of Jackson's to-do list, it would be understandable if the New Zealander didn't get around to ole Tintin for quite some time, but he recently told European press that his entry is planned to go in front of cameras in 2013 in order to be ready for a 2015 release date. And it's certainly not impossible, either, considering that performance-capture films can be fully shot in a (relatively) short span of time. It's the postproduction animation that eats up all the time and money.

We already know that the film, rumored to be titled The Adventures of Tintin: Prisoners of the Sun, has a finished script from writer Anthony Horowitz, and that financiers Sony and Paramount have already paid for some amount of preproduction development for the film about a strange illness that stems from a sacred Incan tomb, so assuming Jackson doesn't see fit to squeeze in yet another Hobbit movie, he's definitely got time to get it out the door by 2015.

Good news, Tintin fans? And if so, is there any way Jackson can top the first film's best sequence?
