X-Men: Days of Future Past director Bryan Singer is back to breaking with tradition by announcing big casting news not through the normal channels of industry trade sites and publicists, but through casual tweets. The latest addition to the film's already impressive cast is Peter Dinklage, an actor who has always been a welcome presence in movies but whose popularity has exploded over the past year or so thanks to his award-winning role as Tyrion Lannister on the HBO show Game of Thrones.
As for who Dinklage will be playing, Singer hasn't tweeted that yet. He clearly knows how to play up buzz, so he left that little detail out, causing fans to speculate. The leading theory, given the actor's size, is that he'll be playing Puck, a member of Alpha Flight (the Canadian X-Men, essentially) who was, in the comics, basically a dwarf who kicked a lot of ass. Puck is not an established part of the Days of Future Past storyline, however, and Singer has said he wants to have a CGI character in the film, so don't let Dinklage's size alone lock you into expectations of who he's playing. We'll have to wait a few months -- or, gasp, all the way up to its July 18, 2014 release! -- to find out for sure how he fits into Singer and screenwriter Simon Kinberg's take on the material.
Since that seems like an awfully long way away, Dinklage fans will be happy to see him in Game of Thrones starting again in March. On the big-screen front, his next movie is Knights of Badassdom, though that film's been completed but sitting on a shelf for over a year. That's rarely a good sign for a movie, so perhaps it stinks, but the below trailer is so much fun we can't help but hold out hope that's not the case:
