Undaunted by the failure of Battleship, director Peter Berg is already lining up new projects. The director (and occasional actor) is currently prepping a Navy SEAL film based on the book Lone Survivor, but recent news also has him attached to direct Father’s Day.
Based on a book by H.G. "Buzz" Bissinger, Father's Day is a biography chronicling the author’s relationship with his twin sons, including one who has intellectual handicaps. A summer road trip provides the backdrop as the father tries to understand what his disabled son is going through. Sounds like quite the change of pace from Battleship.
Berg and Bissinger (who are cousins) have collaborated in the past. The filmmaker turned Bissinger’s tome about Texas High School football into the feature Friday Night Lights, which was then spun off into a five-season television series produced by Berg. Can they recapture that sort of magic with this new tale? Only time will tell.
No word yet on who will produce the film – but Universal is currently considering it as part of the first look deal between Berg and the studio.
