If you were wondering when it was officially okay to use the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina as the focal point for a Hollywood thriller, the answer is apparently now. Filmmaker Eric Heisserer (writer of The Thing prequel and the A Nightmare on Elm Street remake) will use Katrina as the backdrop for his new feature film Hours – which is set to make its debut at this year’s SXSW fest.
Paul Walker headlines the project (which is still seeking distribution), playing a father forced to stay in an abandoned hospital with his prematurely born daughter during the storm. Flood waters, looters and a lack of electricity (the baby can’t breathe without a ventilator…) all conspire to bring about an unhappy ending, but we’re guessing Walker prevails in the end.
