We're absolutely loving the way they're marketing Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master in these first two "installments," adequately teasing the hell out of a film that we've been looking forward to since Anderson destroyed our souls with There Will Be Blood. And they're teasing it without all the fluff of a proper Hollywood trailer; just a piece of Jonny Greenwood's haunting score creeping beneath the surface of Anderson's latest intensely character-driven drama as we're slowly introduced to its mysterious characters and their world. You can tell Anderson is heavily involved in the cutting of these trailers because they're meticulously shaped and crafted, and can we have more please?
The first teaser introduced us to Joaquin Phoenix's character being grilled by a therapist or doctor, and we're with him again for this one, only now we get to meet Philip Seymour Hoffman's character, who's the inquisitive leader of what appears to be a Scientology-esque belief system. Amy Adams is here too, as Hoffman's wife.
Just another fragment of a puzzle that will surely unravel itself later this summer when The Master premieres at either the Venice Film Festival, Telluride, and/or Toronto, and I wouldn't count out a surprise appearance at Fantastic Fest either, which is where Anderson brought There Will be Blood as well.
The Master officially hits theaters on October 12th.
