In a move that is surprising to no one, Paramount Pictures is hard at work brainstorming ideas for both Paranormal Activity 4 and Transformers 4, according to Viacom CEO Philipe Dauman.
The executive revealed these tidbits during a recent conference call – where he also discussed plans for a new live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film.
Perhaps the biggest news, though, was the brief discussion of JJ Abrams’ Star Trek sequel. Dauman says Abrams is “focused on developing the next installment of our Star Trek franchise” and that the film is now scheduled for release sometime in 2013. Noooooo! That’s so far away…
The update on Paranormal Activity 4 was at least somewhat unexpected – not because anyone thought there wouldn’t be a fourth film after the third film had the highest opening ever for a horror movie, but because Paramount Vice Chairman said last month that there was no sequel in development. Apparently, things have changed.
Now that Transformers 4 is officially in the “idea” stage, we can probably expect a deluge of stories about whether or not Michael Bay and Shia LaBeouf will return to the franchise. Hasbro, meanwhile, is thrilled by the idea of another film. Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner has said “It would be silly for us not to talk about having another Transformers movie.” Silly indeed, since the last film has grossed over a billion dollars to date.
