Our Favorite Speeches: 'Stripes'

Jul 18, 2011

We started the "Our Favorite Speeches" column with Animal House, and now we're back with another classic comedy clip from my childhood: Bill Murray's motivational speech to his motley crew of soldiers in Ivan Reitman's 1981 military farce Stripes. By this point Murray had already mastered his own style of confident hucksterism, and his skill at owning the screen is never more apparent than when he's simply "rambling." The following clip may not be as iconic as Murray's delivery of "Dat's the fact, Jack!," which shows up a bit later in the film, but it does offer a young Bill Murray at the top of his goofy game.

You'll also spot old friends like Harold Ramis, John Candy, Judge Reinhold, and John Diehl as members of John Winger's clumsy brigade, but for pals like Warren Oates, John Larroquette, Sean Young, and (dear lord) PJ Soles, you'll have to revisit the flick in full. (And feel free to stick with the theatrical cut. I adore Stripes, but the original version is more than long enough.)
