Details surrounding Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty have been almost as hard to come by as mission details in the immediate aftermath of the event that inspired it – last year’s takedown of Al Quaeda leader Osama Bin Laden. We do have one big piece of news to share today, though – the film will feature Bin Laden and we now know who will play him.
Relatively unknown British actor Ricky Sekhon has been cast as the Saudi-born terrorist mastermind in Bigelow’s upcoming feature. With only two credits to his name on his IMDB page, it’s pretty obvious the director went way off the grid to find her Bin Laden, but the actor does bear a resemblance to the man responsible for launching the attacks that brought down the World Trade Center.
Reports indicate that Sekhon lost roughly 26 pounds to get closer to Bin Laden’s 165- pound weight. We’re not sure what else he’s done to prepare to play one of history’s most infamous figures, partially because he admits he’s signed a hefty non-disclosure agreement, but also because we know so little about Bin Laden in the first place.
The casting has only come to light now because of “the sensitive nature” of certain characters in the film in relation to the plot. That leads us to wonder what other surprises Bigelow might have in store for us...
IndieWire reports the film is currently moving production to London and is still on schedule for an official revealing this December. Featuring a gigantic cast (including Chris Pratt, Kyle Chandler, Jessica Chastain, Joel and Nash Edgerton, and more), Zero Dark Thirty will be Bigelow’s first theatrically-released film since winning an Oscar for her work on The Hurt Locker in 2009.
