I was wandering through my twitter feed when I came across a tidbit from an old friend (by way of a new friend) that simply has to be shared. I hope you're sitting down:
"Looks like "Showgirls 2: Penny's From Heaven" is having a one-night screening at the Sunset 5 next Thursday. Running time 143 minutes (!)" -- @KarinaLongworth (and thanks to @stalepopcornau for the retweet)
So that'd be Thursday the 27th in Los Angeles. And those guys say Austin gets all the best screenings.
For those who may have been blissfully unaware of the existence of both Showgirls 2 and its endlessly clever subtitle Penny's From Heaven, here's a plot synopsis, courtesy of the IMDb:
"Las Vegas stripper, Penny Slot (Rena Riffell), sets out on an adventure to become the star dancer on a dance television show. With stars in her eyes, she tries to find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow but instead finds danger in a town more wicked than Sin City. Romance then leads her down a path towards her dream of stardom, fame, and fortune. But danger lurks at every twist and turn while Penny Slot becomes lured by a dangerous love triangle full of temptation and seduction."
So who is Rena Riffel? I'm glad you asked. Not only is she an actress in films like Breast Men, Candyman 3, Mulholland Drive, Striptease, and Showgirls, but she's also the writer / director of ... Showgirls 2: Penny's From Heaven! Pretty cool to see a writer / director / lead actor who is a female -- but why'd it have to be in a SHOWGIRLS sequel?!?
Obviously I cannot wait to see this film.
(Thanks again to Karina for bringing this news to my attention. Obviously you should be reading her stuff at LA Weekly.)
(That's Rena Riffel, not Karina Longworth.)
